There Is an Annual Report About Your Own Water
It arrives, or it is posted, every year. It is the only document that turns “I want a filter” into a question with an answer.
The takeaway
Every community water system in the United States must publish an annual Consumer Confidence Report setting out where the water comes from, what was monitored and what was detected. It is free, it covers your own supply, and from 1 January 2027 systems serving 10,000 or more people must issue one twice a year.

What it is
A Consumer Confidence Report. Every community water system in the United States has had to produce one since 1998, summarizing where the water comes from, what was monitored, what was detected, and any violations of the drinking water regulations.
Under the original rule it goes out annually by 1 July, mailed or directly delivered to each customer, with a copy to the state.

Why it is the starting point
Because a filter is bought against a list. Something certified to reduce one named thing does nothing about another, and the only way to know which list matters at your address is to know what your supply actually contains.
Buying first and asking afterwards is how people end up with equipment that is working perfectly and solving nothing. What a certification actually covers.
Where to find yours
Look for the name of your water system — the name on the water bill, not the name of the town, because they are frequently different. Search for that name together with the phrase consumer confidence report or annual water quality report.
If the system serves 50,000 or more people, the revisions require it on a public website and kept available for three years. Otherwise, telephone the system and ask for the most recent one; they are required to be able to provide it.

And it is about to arrive more often
EPA finalized revisions to the rule on 15 May 2024, with compliance beginning 1 January 2027. From then, systems serving 10,000 or more people distribute twice a calendar year rather than once.

What to do with it once you have it
Read the table, which takes about ten minutes once somebody has explained the columns, and which almost nobody has had explained to them.
The columns, in order, and which two of them actually matter.
Read your report before you buy anything. It is published about your own system, it costs nothing, and it is the only thing that turns “I want a filter” into a question with an answer. If you do want something installed after that, we will route you to a contractor covering your area, matched on your ZIP code — you are never charged. Filtration is only our subject — every sort of plumbing job can be routed from here.
